Description
The Highways England technical lead for noise is a member of the BSi EH1/2 Transportation Noise Committee. This committee is currently exploring the possibility of developing a British Standard to replace the methodology set out in Calculation of Road Traffic Noise, HMSO 1988, (CRTN). Restrictions on public travel were announced in the Prime Ministers Statement on 23rd March 2020 due the COVID-19 pandemic, and these have led to significant reduction traffic flows across the country, including on the strategic road network (SRN). Noise surveys undertaken whilst the restrictions are in place have the potential to obtain data that will prove invaluable during work to develop the replacement for CRTN, particularly if measurements are repeated once the travel restrictions are lifted. The task is deigned to collect as much data as possible, whilst minimising travel by those undertaking the monitoring. It is therefore proposed to ask UK noise professionals to undertake monitoring at their home addresses, where those addresses have the potential to provide good data.
