Q038 Refurbishment and Repairs of Devey West Wing, Smithills Hall, Bolton

The works are to be carried out to the Victorian Devey wing of the Grade 1 Listed Smithills Hall. Internal refurbishment and repair is to include the full reinstatement of Victorian oak panelling and ornamental ceilings, the refurbishment of ornamental parquet flooring and the replacement of inappropriate contemporary fittings to restore the heritage significance of the internal spaces. New snack areas are to be created at ground and first floor and an opening created in the Victorian panelling and wall to provide separate access to a small toilet facility. External works include repairs to the roof, chimneys and leadwork and specialist repairs to the half timbering, windows and external lime render infil panels. Work is also proposed to install new services and air handling plant within the roof void and to provide improved access to the roof via openings in an existing half timbered gable. A new reception counter is to be created and a first floor area adapted as a staff welfare area.
