Description
The existing site constraints at Stamfordham make it impossible to measure flows accurately at low and high flows and the site has never returned satisfactory data. The stone retaining walls were not built straight and create eddies and turbulence that disrupts the flow measurement. The flows from this site inform flood forecasting, and therefore produces a greater uncertainty for flood levels downstream and a reduced accuracy of our flood warnings. In addition the site is already in operation with utilities and estates agreements and is the best viable location for flow monitoring. The Stamfordham gauging station improvements will allow continued recording of level and flow from Stamfordham gauging station for Water Resources (WR) and Flood and Coastal Risk Management (FCRM), which is accurate and reliable and provide data for flood warning.
