Description
Mobile application development for citizen science applications is closely aligned with the open source software Indicia, that is designed to collect structured biodiversity data via citizen science approaches. UKCEH are one of the main developers of the Indicia software tools, and host a data warehouse to support a range of citizen science projects. The mobile applications developed through this funding, via the Natural Capital Ecosystem Assessment (NCEA) project are integrated with Indicia to allow the data to flow into existing projects and analysis pipelines to support wider research applications. The supplier, Flumens, has specific expertise in using the Indicia software, built up through development of other mobile applications (e.g. iMammalia, Butterfly Count) - some funded through UKCEH projects and some developed through funding from other organisations. A recent tendering exercise with other suppliers of wildlife-focused mobile applications demonstrated that there is high extra cost (and time) for other suppliers developing capacity to work with Indicia.
