Description
The main objective of this work is to support the industry in the introduction of battery powered trains with a clear understanding of the differences and issues that arise in their operation as a result of the new traction power source by: •Understanding current battery technology available for rail use and review existing/planned projects. Identify safety and operational issues and transferable standards from other industries to rail. •Undertaking a risk assessment of a battery powered train in different configurations (battery only or hybrid/ multi-mode) and its system interfaces - including charging solutions - and proposing mitigation actions. •Informing specific design solutions for battery powered trains and charging solutions through a sound understanding of operational considerations and safety risk. •Producing a safety and compatibility assessment methodology and roadmap. Additional information: The contracting authority considers that this contract may be suitable for economic operators that are small or medium enterprises (SMEs). However, any selection of tenderers will be based solely on the criteria set out for the procurement.
