Work description

This tender is for the cleaning and conservation works associated with the Shaw and Crompton War memorial. The memorial is located at the North West side of the High Street in the centre of Shaw, Oldham. It was commissioned by the Crompton War Memorial Committee in 1919, the main bronze statue being designed by Richard Reginald Goulden. The bronze sits on a Scottish Granite plinth and depicts a male figure protecting children from marauding beasts. Over a number of years the bronze lacquer coat has degraded and the bronze has started to corrode. The project works will remove the existing lacquer coating, undertake localised cleaning of the areas of corrosion together with some re-patination and then apply wax protective coatings. In addition, the stonework to the steps of the plinth are to be re-set and the stonework cleaned. A new wreath support wire system will also be fitted to the base of the monument.
