Work description
Highways England has developed a draft signing strategy to sign Local Authorities' charging Clean Air Zones (CAZ) from the Strategic Road Network (SRN). Highways England is also supporting cities by applying the strategy to complete preliminary designs for signs on the SRN for the first cities (including Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, Newcastle, Bristol and Greater Manchester) as they develop their CAZ implementation plans. Lesson learned from developing the preliminary designs for signs on the SRN to support the Greater Manchester CAZ mean there is now a need to modify the signing strategy to enable publication. In addition, the extensive size of the Greater Manchester CAZ, covering the entire combined authority's area, and the sheer number of signs to be preliminary designed, several of which are on gantries that have required capacity assessments, means that the preliminary designs still need to be finalised.
