Work description
The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) is the UK's National Measurement Institute and is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate measurement standards, science, and technology available.
The Nuclear Metrology group maintains a small suite of high-purity germanium gamma-ray spectrometers for the measurement of environmental level radioactive samples. The lead shields used to house these detectors at NPL are constructed of low-background lead that is over 500 years old but were manufactured over 25 years ago and are need of a redesign to fit the dimensions of new detectors that are being procured and to improve their functionality, including the capability to mount cosmic-ray suppression shields. The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) requirement is to engage the service of a supplier who will provide a new design of a low-background shield for our high-purity germanium gamma-ray spectrometers, in consultation with NPL, and the manufacture and delivery of one shield.
