## Description

The National Physical Laboratory \(NPL\) is the UK's National Measurement Institute and is a world-leading centre of excellence in developing and applying the most accurate measurement standards, science, and technology available\. The Nuclear Metrology group maintains a small suite of high-purity germanium gamma-ray spectrometers for the measurement of environmental level radioactive samples\. The lead shields used to house these detectors at NPL are constructed of low-background lead that is over 500 years old but were manufactured over 25 years ago and are need of a redesign to fit the dimensions of new detectors that are being procured and to improve their functionality, including the capability to mount cosmic-ray suppression shields\. The National Physical Laboratory \(NPL\) requirement is to engage the service of a supplier who will provide a new design of a low-background shield for our high-purity germanium gamma-ray spectrometers, in consultation with NPL, and the manufacture and delivery of one shield\.
