Work description

Bagmere, Chapel Mere, Hatch Mere, Oak Mere and Quoisley Meres all located within Cheshire, and are part of the internationally important Midland Meres and Mosses. All are designated as Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Ramsar sites and Oak Mere is also Special Area of Conservation (SAC), and are considered to be in unfavourable condition.

All of the listed Cheshire meres are failing their water quality objectives for SSSI favourable condition status, therefore Natural England have proposed a programme of actions to improve the Cheshire mere’s conservation and Water Framework Directive (WFD) status. One of these actions is to carry out a catchment walkover survey of the inflows into the meres to understand sources of nutrients, fine sediments and other pollutants.
