Description
(i) Highway Structures are maintained in the districts as part of the statutory obligation of the highway authority to maintain public highways as set out in the Highways Act 1980. The provisions of the Act set out duties and responsibilities of the Councils as the local Highway Authorities. (ii) Highway Structures include: bridges (including footbridges, cycle route bridges, bridleway bridges, accommodation bridges, occupation bridges, swing bridges, subways, underpasses, buried culverts); retaining walls; sign/signal gantries; cantilever road signs; tunnels and which satisfy the dimensional criteria defined in the Well-Managed Highway Infrastructure: Code of Practice - Part C and BD 2/12 CG 300 (Technical Approval of Highway Structures). (iii) Undertaking regular planned inspections of Highway Structures assets is one of the ways by which the authorities fulfil their duties and responsibilities to help ensure that these vital assets continue to be safe for use and fit for purpose. The authorities consider these inspections to be a vital part of their highway structures asset management process.
